About Peaceful Rise
Peaceful Rise (和平崛起 heping jueqi) is one of the formulations for the current guiding foreign policy of the People’s Republic of China. And just as countries may strive to rise peacefully on the international stage, so do people in hot-air balloons, or breads in pans. There is therefore a universality to the concept of Peaceful Rise that transcends borders, supercedes trifling categorizations of vegetable, animal, or mineral, and spreads a bounty of warm fuzzies to the four corners of the Earth.
In short, the mission of this website is nothing short of world peace. We accomplish this by bringing you art, articles, and other news and musings on a semi-regular basis, straight from the heart of the Middle Kingdom.
About the Author
Peaceful Rise is brought to you by Joel Rosen, an American resident of Beijing. Joel’s sordid romance with China began when he finally realized his childhood dream of learning Kung Fu at the late age of seventeen. After watching Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon as part of his training regimen, he became enamored of Zhang Ziyi and the Chinese language, moved out to the desolate cornfields of Ohio, and began studying Mandarin at Oberlin College.
Since completing his studies, Joel has enjoyed a stint lending his bilingual expertise to China’s movie industry. He worked briefly in pre-production on The Forbidden Kingdom, joined the special effects crew on The Kite Runner, and narrowly escaped certain firey death by leaving The Battle of Red Cliff and fleeing to safety by the quiet shores of New England. He returned to Beijing in 2008, where he is currently weathering the Olympics at a visa-providing desk job. He enjoys frisbee, weiqi, and writing about himself in the third person.
